Spyker drop Albers
July 10th 2007 13:20
Christjian Albers has been sacked from Spyker F1 for financial reasons relating to his personal sponsors.
In a statement yesterday, Spyker boss, Colin Kolles said, “This has been a difficult decision…but the team’s ambitious development programme has been seriously compromised by non-payment by one of (Albers’) sponsors and we are faced with no other option.”
The sacking comes only weeks after Albers drew heavy criticism from Spyker’s technical director, Mike Gascoyne for driving off down the pitlane with a fuel hose still attached to the car after a pit-stop blunder at the French GP.
However Michiel Mol, Spyker’s Director of Fomula One, stressed that the decision was not related to Albers’ recent form, and wished the Dutch driver “every success in the future”.
Possible candidates for Albers’ former race seat include Spyker testers Guido van der Garde and Marcus Winklehock, as well as Williams’ tester Narain Karthikeyan.
However, former Red Bull driver, and current Honda tester, Christian Klien is the current favourite to fill the vacancy at the team.
