Ralf leaving Toyota
October 1st 2007 13:56
After a mediocre season, Ralf Schumacher announced his decision to leave Toyota at the end of the season.
The German made the announcement on his website, citing his desire to opt for a “new challenge” after spending three years with the team.
"I joined Toyota with high expectations, he said, “But I am waiting for years for a competitive car."
"Toyota also was a nice and interesting experience - particularly the cooperation with the team, engineers and mechanics. Still, it’s time now to look for a new challenge."
It comes as no surprise as the 32-year-old’s position in the team has been under scrutiny for some time, especially after being outclassed this season by teammate, Jarno Trulli.
Whether it was Schumacher’s or Toyota’s decision is unclear, but the six-time grand prix winner is still set to race for the Japanese outfit in the remaining races of 2007.
"It goes without saying that I’m extremely motivated when it comes to racing at Shanghai and São Paulo. I will give my very best to at least finish the mulled season on a high, with and for Toyota," he said.
Where the brother of F1 great, Michael Schumacher will end up next season is unknown as yet.
"I'm going to have several conversations in the coming weeks,” he said.
“I will announce my decision when the season is over.”
As for who will replace him, rumours that the team are after Williams’ Nico Rosberg are likely to pick up steam, especially considering Toyota supply engines to the English team.
