Montoya: Favouritism at McLaren
June 21st 2007 01:51
Former McLaren driver, Juan Pablo Montoya has supported claims by Fernando Alonso that McLaren are favouring their rookie driver, Lewis Hamilton.
Montoya, now racing in NASCAR in the United States after a falling out with McLaren in 2006, told the Associated Press that Hamilton is “clearly the number one in the team”.
"There's always a number one at McLaren. I mean, Fernando Alonso said it himself,” he said.
The Colombian went on to explain that Hamilton’s advantage was not so much the fact he was British, as Alonso suggested, but that he has been tied to the McLaren team for many years.
“(Team Principal) Ron Dennis paid his whole career,” he said, “He got to Formula One because Ron paid for his whole career.”
“He's been under Ron Dennis since the kid was 8 years old or something,” he said.
However, Montoya did not deny Hamilton’s ability,:“Oh, he's really good,” he stated, “I am not going to say the guy is not good. The guy is really good.”
“But he has an advantage that ... they are always going to say that it's equal stuff,” he added.
“But there really always is a favourite driver on the team."
