Honda focusing on next year: Button
August 28th 2007 12:58
Beleaguered Honda driver, Jenson Button, is adamant that his team’s fortunes will dramatically improve next year.
The Japanese car making giant are currently battling through one of the most startling slumps in form, which has seen them go from race-winners last season, to tailenders in 2007.
Button, who won his first grand prix with Honda at Hungary last year, has scored a measly one point so far, which remains Honda’s only contribution to the 2007 tally board.
However, the Briton is confident that Honda can bounce back into form in 2008.
"The next two or three races are going to be tough, but there is so much going on in the background for later this year and already for next year," said Button.
"Yes, the focus is on next year, but we still need to work with this car to understand which direction works for us.
"So there's lots going on, and it's actually very exciting,” said the 27-year-old.
"I think everybody back at base (the Honda factory) is very excited about the future, but as always it just takes time.
"But that excitement is real and genuine for next year,” he said.
"We're heading in a very different direction than we've been going all this season, and probably for the last couple of years, which is good.
"But it's still difficult to say whether we are going to have a car that is quick enough to win next season.
"You never know at this time of the year. Lots can change for next year, but the people we now have on board do have some very good ideas."
Jenson is yet to witness firsthand what is generating his optimism, but ever the team-player, he is planning a factory visit to see just how the Honda 2008 campaign will begin.
