Hamilton no Senna, but he has Alonso rattled: Mansell
June 14th 2007 01:46
Former world champion, Nigel Mansell has spoken about the duel between McLaren drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.
After Hamilton took his maiden victory in Canada, Alonso, who finished 7th, spoke about how McLaren favoured the young Briton over himself, and how he had 'never been completely comfortable at Woking.
However, Mansell told sportsasylum.com that Hamilton has dealt a psychological blow to the defending champion.
"I don't think anyone can compete with Lewis at the moment. Alonso drove from the start of the race as though he was rattled, said Mansell, "His mistake on the first corner was very uncharacteristic and later in the race he broke the car."
The 1992 champion believes that Hamilton could win the championship, saying it
would be "a remarkable achievement."
"If he keeps his head then the percentages of him winning the world title are very much on his side," he said. "The only person he's got to beat is Alonso and he's already done that. What impresses me most is that he has Alonso rattled and that is remarkable."
However, unlike many of his peers, Mansell stopped short of comparing the 22-year-old rookie to former legends.
"He has done marvellously so far and it has been brilliant for British motor racing. But I am not going to compare him with Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher," he said, "There's a long way to go before anyone can consider that."
