Flavio dismisses Renault spying scandal
September 15th 2007 04:00
In today’s press conference, Renault boss, Flavio Briatore dismissed claims the situation that lead to his team being reported to the FIA by McLaren bears any resemblance to the recent scandal which saw the Woking squad booted from the 2007 constructors championship.
“First, if somebody tells me it’s the same, I sue somebody, quickly,” said the flamboyant Italian.
“Second, it’s not an investigation regarding myself and the team. Third, we give all the information to the Federation, at least when we found out something, and this is it. It’s as simple as that,” he said
McLaren reported Renault last week, allegedly because the French team was in possession of three disks of McLaren cooling and electronic system information, supplied by defected engineer.
Little more has come of it, after the FIA insisted that McLaren’s bid to see Renault investigated was to wait while they themselves faced the WMSC.
Briatore was hesitant to discuss the nature of the situation, but was adamant that his team had not committed a crime akin to that of McLaren.
“I don’t want, at this moment (to talk) about Renault because first we are not being investigated, second we give all our evidence to McLaren and to Mr Mosley and to the Federation,” he said.
As for McLaren’s punishment, the Renault boss was satisfied, but said was a bit “harsh”.
"I think it's very harsh. What more could they give to McLaren?,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"Well, taking away from a team all the points gained this season is a big blow. In Formula One a lot of money is spent, and McLaren has a lot less at their disposal now," he said.
However, Briatore still believed the WMSC had to do something,” What was decided by the world council will certainly be a deterrent," he said.
"The most important thing, however, is that in Paris the truth emerged and a punishment was imposed. There will be a more serene atmosphere in Belgium than at Monza."
