F1 on Ice
February 6th 2007 00:48
BMW wowed Swiss onlookers yesterday, when German driver Nick Heidfeld took the F1.06 for a literal spin on the frozen lake of St Moritz.
Some 15,000 people gathered to witness the unique event, which was in celebration of the 100th anniversary of White Turf St Moritz, an annual horse-racing event.
Heidfeld seized the reins of his specially modified BMW (with spiked tyres and special radiator covers), and took it for a ride never before experienced by an F1 car.
"That was quite a unique experience - just seeing the magnificent mountain scenery surrounding the lake is really impressive," said Heidfeld.
"The frozen track was of course much rougher than what I'm used to in Formula One. Although it was by no means easy to apply force on such a surface, I enjoyed the drive immensely."
