Formula 1 - January 2008

2008 is go!

January 14th 2008 00:48
Ferrari
Ferrari were the first to peel back the covers off their 2008 challenger, the Ferrari F2008. Bearing a remarkable resemblance to the championship-winning F2007, the F2008 is yet another instalment of the Scuderia’s time-trusted “evolution not revolution” design philosophy. Its been said the F2008 will be geared to suit reigning champion, Kimi Raikkonen’s driving style – but Ferrari insist that Brazilian hotshoe, Felipe Massa has an equal shot at the title. Michael Schumacher was also nearby – and stated that he would be active in developing the car over the year. Be afraid opposition.

McLaren
The Woking based squad again came second to Ferrari, this time in the launching of their 2008 challenger. The MP4-23 was unveiled in a rather low-key ceremony at Jerez, with young guns Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen sporting broad grins. The new car bears the striking, curvaceous genes of its winning predecessor. Boss Ron Dennis said he’s forgotten the troubled 2007 campaign and is looking to the future but it would hard to ignore the numbers 22 and 23 emblazoned on the cars –souvenirs from the infamous spying scandal that cost McLaren a dead certain constructors gong.

Toyota
The Japanese giants are desperate to claw their way out the rut that has dogged them for the couple of seasons. At a small launch at their Cologne headquarters, Toyota revealed the TF108, a totally revised machine from those of the past. Drastic aero rethinks, a new gearbox and a longer wheelbase are among some of the changes to the slightly newly liveried Toyota. Jarno Trulli and newboy Timo Glock were upbeat about the new car – they’d need to be considering Toyota are now a crucial point in their F1 life. They need to perform. Now.
