Formula 1 - January 2007

f1centre unfortunately was absent during the last week, when several teams launched their 2007 cars. But here is a quick recap of the mid-January launches.

Ferrari

Ferrari launched their new car on the 14th of January, with Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa presenting the gleaming new F2007 in Ferrari's home base at Maranello. Peter Sauber described the F2007 as "the most innovative", while driver, Felipe Massa described it as "beautiful". Ferrari hope their unique blend of beauty and innovation will regain them the title that Renualt took from them in 2005.Gallery

Mclaren

The next day McLaren showed off their new car, the MP4-22, as well as two completely new drivers in defending world champion, Fernando Alonso and the much-hyped British rookie (and GP2 champion) Lewis Hamilton. The new Vodafone liveried car was presented to a media throng in Valenica, keen to eyeball the new McLaren's so-called "advanced concepts".

BMW Sauber

BMW then unveiled their contender, the F1.07 on the 16th in Valencia .Proud boss, Mario Theissen was hesitant to predict any wins in 2007, but said that the team was aiming for more podiums and that wins were the aim for 2008. 2007 marks a transition year for BMW, with the completion of the building upgrade at the old Sauber factory in Hinwil due, as well as an increase in the workforce, to 430 people. Rave drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica were accompanied by test drivers, Timo Glock and 19-year old prodigy, Sebastian Vettel.

And yesterday, Renault launched their new car in Amsterdam, honouring their new title sponsor, ING. Giancarlo Fisichella will steer the number 1 car in 2007, hoping to contain his rookie Finnish teammate, Heikki Kovalainen who is rated highly by team boss Flavio Briatore. Renault are hoping for their third successive championship in 2007, a feat that Briatore believes is well within reach.

The Best of 2006

January 11th 2007 12:00
Best driver: Michael Schumacher
Michael Schumacher
Formula One’s most successful driver came within a breath of clinching title number eight. Schumacher and Ferrari picked themselves up off the canvas on which they were felled upon in 2005, and came out swinging in 2006, taking Renault head-on. Back to back wins in Imola (under immense pressure) and the Nurburgring marked Schumacher as the only real contender to Alonso’s crown. The ever-consistent Spaniard mounted a 25-point lead after round 9 in Canada, but from there, Michael relentlessly went about bridging the gap. Seven rounds and five wins later, Schumacher was level with his nemesis leading into the Japanese Grand Prix. The rest is of course history. A rare engine failure ground the German’s momentum to a heartbreaking stop, sinking any hope of eight World Driver’s Championships.
